Welcome to this series of blogs we playfully named “Bobble Around with Doc”.  In this series, we will share former student’s heartfelt tributes as well as some of Doc’s stories, adventures and fun facts.

One might ask, why the bobblehead?

At Doc’s 80th birthday party his daughter Kerri gave him a custom bobblehead.  It instantly became a hit with the DocFest family who in turn adopted it as their mascot.  The whimsical figurine has found its way on all of the DF traditional celebratory cakes as well as part of this series.

Follow us as we learn more about why Doc is so loved and adored!
Series 1 Episode 1
Doc Reunites with Alan Hampton backstage at DaCamera Houston

Another magnificent DaCamera concert last Friday: Gretchen Parlato with an A-team rhythm section: Taylor Eigsti, Alan Hampton (‘PVA ’00), Mark Guiliana. Of course, I paid special attention to Alan, and he was splendid all-around! (tone, intonation, soloing, accompanying – even guitar playing/singing!). As I wrote to Gretchen, that evening was not “just” a concert, but an experience.

Thank you again, DaCamera – looking forward to the new season…

Doc Morgan (posted on his Facebook page 8/22/23)

In 2000, Alan Hampton, a bass/singer/songwriter, was the first recipient of the Helen and Bob Morgan Jazz Scholarship.

The DocFest Board of Directors, in consultation with Dr. Morgan and his wife, Helen, has established that funds generated by DocFest will primarily be dedicated to the Helen and Bob Morgan Jazz Scholarship Fund at New York’s The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, endowed by the Morgans (with assistance from SBC Foundation) in 1999.  Many of HSPVA’s most outstanding jazz graduates have attended New School/Jazz, including DocFest co-founder Chris Walker.

As DocFest matures, it is anticipated that additional beneficiaries will be considered (for example, there are also Morgan endowed scholarships at the University of North Texas and Boston’s Berklee College of Music), and, indeed, recent substantial contributions have been made to North Texas and Berklee.  All Morgan Scholarships are reserved for alumni of Kinder HSPVA.

In addition, thanks to the success of DocFest concerts and generosity of Board members, substantial contributions have been made to HSPVA Friends in support of current HSPVA jazz activities.

Thus far, DocFest has contributed over $200,000 to the Helen and Bob Morgan Jazz Scholarship. Your DocFest donations will help support this fund.
