Join the DocFest family in Congratulating Warren Sneed on his upcoming retirement as Director of Jazz Studies at Kinder HSPVA.

Warren Sneed is retiring after 24 years as Director of Jazz Studies at Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in Houston, Texas. An HSPVA alumnus, he has a Master’s degree in Applied Music from the University of Houston and a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Education from the University of North Texas where he played saxophone in the One O’clock Lab Band.

Prior to teaching at HSPVA, Mr. Sneed directed various jazz bands and taught Improvisation and Jazz History at the University of Houston and Houston Community College. Sneed is a past president of the Texas Jazz Educators Association (2019) and has served as the Jazz Coordinator for Texas Music Educators Association Region 23 since 2008. 

Sneed is very active in the Houston music scene and has performed a wide variety of musical styles from jazz to pop and classical. He has performed in jazz duos, trios, musicals, variety bands, and the Houston Symphony Pops. Sneed’s performance credits include the Houston Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Houston Orchestra, Larry Slezak’s Sax No End, Louis Hayes, Ed Shaughnessy, Freddie Hubbard, Doc Cheatum, Kenny Wheeler, Carl Fontana, Rosemary Clooney, Bob Dorough, Roseanna Vitro, Todd Coolman, Jimmy Haslip, Mitch Watkins, Helen Sung, Dennis Dotson, Dave Catney, Joe LoCascio, Pamela York, Tianna Hall & the Houston Jazz Band, Grisha Alexiev’s Textet (featuring Diana Herold) and many others.  

During the concert, Warren Sneed, Mark Holden and Walter Smith III will be inducted into the HSPVA Jazz Hall of Fame (previous inductees may be seen at docfestjazz.org/hall-of-fame). DocFest ’24 will take place Saturday, March 23rd at 7 pm, in the Denney Theatre which is located in Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (790 Austin St., Houston, TX 77002).
